Here are some of our dos and don'ts when registering domain names. Please note that these aren't hard and fast rules and there are always exceptions. If you are unsure then give one of our online marketing team a call or send an email to .

• Do not use brand names or trade marks which belong to other companies.
• Do not use a limited (ltd) company name which belongs to another company.
• If possible, do not use hyphens
• If possible, do not use mobile phone text message abbreviations, such as '2' for 'to', '4' for 'for', 'u' for 'you' and 'ur' for 'your'.
• If possible, do not use numerical characters
• If possible, do not use unnecessary words like 'the', 'ltd' and 'company'.
• If you use more than one word, do not end and start words with the same character.
• If you use more than one word, do not end one word with a letter and start a new word with the same letter.
• Do not pay too much.

• Keep it short.
• Register a .com and also your corresponding country code (tld), for example .co.uk if your company is UK based, or .ae if you are in the UAE.
• Also register the .net if it is available.
• Make sure it is easy to spell.
• Use plain and simple English.
• Make sure it is easy to pronounce on the telephone.
• Use real words from the dictionary.
• Use search engine keywords.
• Use words that describe exactly what you do.
• Cover your options and buy more than one domain if you need to.
• Only index one domain per website on search engines, to avoid affecting your search engine ranking.
• Choose a reliable registration company
• Use a popular and mainstream domain extension; don't bother with .biz, .info, etc.
• Ensure the domain is registered to you or your company, not the registrar.
